The Armistice Day Blizzard of 1940
This storm is ranked number two of the top five weather events of the 20th century according to the Minnesota State Climatology. Almost 50 Minnesotans lost their lives during this event. Any person alive during this event could have told you the amount of devastation. This storm occurred on November 11, 1940 and was unpredictable. The weather station predicted a mild storm with a few flurries and low temperatures. The day started out with rain and quickly turned into snow. A lot of people were outside enjoying the flurries coming down until the big blizzard hit. The blizzard stretched across 1,000 miles of land. Most of the people that were killed from this storm were out hunting because they did not expect the big storm as it was not predicted. Most people were not prepared for this storm at all. when the storm was all over there were reports of 17 inches of snow in the twin cites and up to 27 inches of snow in Collegeville. This storm was talked about by some big talk shows all over the nation.
Since this storm came to everybody as such a big surprise they made it so the Chicago weather station is now required to stay alert 24 hours a day. This is because they would have been able to predict the storm much better and could have warned people about the big storm. These people could have prepared better and hunters would not have been out hunting if they would have known what was to come. Since this, the Chicago weather station has predicted many storms that people have been able to prepare for and may have saved many lives.
This event would be a great addition to our museum! This storm stretched over a large portion of the country and effected many of Americans. Dozens of people lost their lives during this tragic blizzard; some from the cold and some from the icy roads being snowed in buildings. This is significant to our country to remember one horrifying event we fought through, and it is significant to the families who lost loved ones to this winter monster.This also changes the way we prepare and predict huge blizzards like this one making it significant to the lives of all Americans.
