The North American Ice Storm of 1961
This ice storm was the most accumulated ice ever recorded. This storm caused 8 inches of ice in areas of Idaho and all the way to the Canadian border. The storm took place from January 1st to January 3rd. They say that the ice was accumulated from a lot of dense fog and freezing temperatures. There was also a lot of freezing rain to help create more ice. There was catastrophic damage to all the trees and to utilities. Before this storm the highest recorded amounts of ice were between 4-6 inches so this storm beat the record by over 2 inches. This ice covered everything and made a lot of things difficult for the people affected by the storm. There were major power outages everywhere the storm had hit.
Since this storm caused such a huge power outage the power companies had to come up with better ways to with stand the harsh weather conditions. Electric companies have had power generators built to make sure a power outage like this does not happen again; at least not as extreme. They have improved their technology and can now restore power to our homes more quickly and can ensure that the power outage won't last too long.
Our museum would not be complete without this infamous event. With record breaking ice accumulation of 8 inches in northern Idaho, many people were astounded by this spectacular occurrence This is no usual storm and came as a complete shock to the people of Idaho. These people were stuck in their houses with no power. This caused statewide panic with all the ice that had damaged so many cars, houses, trees and everything else in its path.
