1993 Storm of the Century
This was much like the Great Storm of 1975 as far as description but with another twist. Not only were there dozens of tornadoes as well as a devastating blizzard, there was also a cyclone of snow and wind that was classified as a hurricane. These hurricane winds carried this snow all the way across the east coast from southern Canada to parts of Cuba. The tornadoes alone killed dozens from Louisiana all the way to Cuba. This storm as a whole was so great and powerful that it killed an astonishing 310 people, including 10 from Cuba. Alabama reported as much as 16 inches of snow that had accumulated and even the panhandle of Florida reported almost a half of a foot of snow on the ground.
This unusual storm inspired southern states such as Alabama and Florida to prepare for winter storms such as this one. On the rare occasion that they do get a blizzard and get snowed in, they needed to have a plan of action to take. They had to realize that their could be a possibility that they would have to drive on icy roads and they need to be prepared for such a situation and now how to handle and react to a situation like this that might take place in the future.
This storm serves a great purpose in our museum. This storm is one of the only snow storms to ever leave snow in southern states such as Alabama and Florida. This storm put record breaking amounts of snow in the snow. The southerners had no idea how to deal with the snow or how to remove it. That makes this storm significant to put in the museum. This storm was also named one of nations biggest snow storms to ever hit the country so it would not make sense to not include the storm in our museum.
