2006-2007 Colorado Holiday Blizzard
This was a series of blizzards that occurred during the last few weeks of 2006 and in the beginning weeks of 2007. The heart of this storm was in Denver, Colorado and caused many roads to shut down as well as the Denver International Airport. There was an estimated 100,000 people effected by the closure of the airport and almost 40,000 were forced to sleep at the airport as they waited for the storm to pass. There was only four confirmed deaths as a result of this storm, but any fatalities are too many fatalities. Farmers found somewhere between 10,000 and 15,000 of their cows dead due to cold and severe weather conditions.
The effect of this storm was too great for the city to handle by themselves. This is one of the first times the State National Guard was called to help relieve the people and the damage of a great blizzard such as this one. Snow removal was very difficult during this storm because the trucks did not have enough power to tackle such a hard project. This is why they teamed up to remove all snow on the road (as shown in the picture above). These city workers did their job in helping their community get through such a hard time and helped out when they were needed most.
This is a good addition to our museum for a couple of different reasons. The first reason this is such a good addition is because it caused the longest shut down of the Denver International Airport. The airport was shut down for a record breaking 45 hours leaving people stranded in the airport. Another reason why we wanted to include this is because it is one of the biggest storms of modern day time. we wanted to include one storm that was more modern and this the one because it was such a massive storm.
