North American Blizzard of 1947
This notorious blizzard left a stunning 26.4 inches of snowfall that covered the ground around Christmas day. This snow was keeping people from leaving their homes and going to work. Due to cold weather conditions, this snow stayed on the ground until March of the next year. This was a major inconvenience to the area that was effected by this snowfall. This was a record breaking amount of snow and, as well as the Armistice Day Blizzard, was unpredicted by our weather stations. This could have been due to the fact that there were no weather stations located near the Atlantic Ocean so they could not have predicted such a disaster.
This event has inspired our nations weather stations to expand and spread to the Eastern boarder of our country. This event has also helped our snow removal system improve. We are now able to remove snow from the streets faster and we can make it safer for people to drive to work in such weather conditions. We now dump snow into the river and into the sewer system. This is because the moving river water and the water in the sewer system tends to be warm enough to melt the snow since the water is flowing.
This particular blizzard is a significant contribution to our museum because this is when our country finally realized that we needed to spread out our weather stations so we could cover all sides of the country. We could not endure another unpredicted storm such as this one that had occurred during the holiday season. we had also learned new ways of snow removal from this blizzard making all of the rest to come a much easier to clean up.
