The 1991 Halloween Blizzard
This blizzard was a massive storm with snow and ice accumulation over large portions of the Upper Midwest. This storm first hit on October 31st but was detected by the weather stations placed near the Atlantic Ocean after the North American Blizzard of 1947. This gave people of this region of the United States time to prepare for this massive blizzard. People stocked up on food and firewood so they could ensure that they would not freeze or starve during before all the snow was removed. However, even after all this preparation 22 people were killed and over 100 people were injured. This was the largest single weather event of its kind and was considered by many to be the "perfect storm."
This storm was a huge cost to the federal government. With this storm destroying over $5 million worth of crops in Iowa and over $63 million in property damage in Minnesota and Wisconsin. 52 different counties in Iowa had declared themselves to be in federal disaster states. This massive blizzard opened the eyes of the people and they finally realized just how powerful nature can be. People of the United States did not want to see an impact as great as this one ever again. With over 100,000 people without power during this storm, electric companies decided to create better power generators and were thinking of new ways of getting power to peoples houses without the risk of losing that power.
This event reflects the whole inspiration for our museum. Being the fiercest storm of its kind, we saw it fit to include it. Not only was it a huge blizzard that covered the whole mid-west, but it also destroyed buildings and cars and ruined the lives of many Americans. I believe victims of this event would be insulted if we did not include this infamous event in our museum. This event caused the biggest ever amount of counties to declare that they were federal disaster counties. This also caused and mass amount of injuries to many people and effected many lives in Iowa as well as Minnesota and Wisconsin.
